Former Justin Herbert Teammate Reveals When He Knew QB1 Was Special
USA TODAY Sports

It didn't take long for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert to make a strong impression on one of his former teammates, Chase Daniel. Herbert pretty much made an instant impression on the NFL world after his debut game and rookie season, but

Daniel, who backed up Herbert from 2021-2022, described what Herbert was like when he came to the Chargers.

"I'll always remember your demeanor is always wanting to get better. You're just so nice, but driven to a point where you would pepper me with questions, but in a way where I was like, 'this guy just won Rookie of the Year, I'm a career backup, what can you learn from me?' I'm the one trying to learn from you. That was the biggest thing that I took away, this guy is constantly, in everything he does, eats sleeps breathes quarterback, trying to get better, especially in the offseason.

Daniel began backing Herbert up heading into Herbert's second NFL season. Herbert had just come off a historic rookie season. Not only did Herbert win the Offensive Rookie of the Year, he set the NFL rookie record for most touchdowns (31) and pass completions (396).

While Herbert's stats and accomplishments from his rookie season alone made him special, his attitude and drive made him stand out to Daniel even more.

These traits don't just stand out to Daniel, either. This kind of drive has turned Herbert into one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the NFL, and a player that many coaches like Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman are eager to work with.
